Having the soft sculptures on the ground rather than on a plinth allows for the viewer to walk around them, just as you would if they were real plants. It also situates them in alignment of the paintings foreground.
To create ‘islands’ for the sculptures, I am using cloth as a base that I will place on the floor. I have painted the cotton fabric with watercolours and then printed onto it using the pattern on some of my earlier heat textile experiments. This has created a dreamy abstraction of what the ground could look like in the landscape in my painting.
