Fabric experiments

Instead of just painting onto coloured fabric, I wanted to explore bringing in some more texture and pattern to work with. I found this silvery/ blue, silky fabric in a second hand shop and thought it was worth a try. The fabric instantly reminded me of waves due to the deep blue shade and the creased, twisted texture. When stretched over a long wooden board, it already gave the illusion of the sea without having to paint in anything.

I first decided to add in sky with oil paint to resemble a definitive landscape. I later then added in some foreground, leaving large areas of negative space to create the illusion of water.

Although I was happy with the fabric choice, I feel as if the colours are a bit dull and muted. I think I will revisit this work and alter the foreground in some way to bring more structure and vibrancy to the painting.
