This holidays task was to take inspiration from a fellow students work from our most recent exhibition and last terms work. I was paired up with My Ngo, https://purplelense.wordpress.com. The main focus throughout their art practice is still life studies, combined with the exploration of colour, specifically pastel and muted tones, mark making through brush strokes, composition and perspective. In their statement they emphasise that they like to take every day objects and create colourful depictions.
This made me think, what ways are there to to take a mundane subject, and make it interesting ? Another thought was to instead of just depicting the mundane objects, to utilise these objects some way in real life or use ready mades. Objects hold a lot of meaning on their own, and have the ability to create juxtapositions and tell stories depending on what they are placed next too or the situation they are in.
The main artists researched by My Ngo was Wayne Thiebaud and Cath Kidston. Other artists that come to mind include Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, Damien Hirst, and Yayoi Kusama.
